Machame 7 Days Package Itenary

The Machame Route is one of the popular trekking routes for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. It is known for its scenic beauty and diverse landscapes, offering trekkers a challenging and rewarding experience. Here’s an overview of the Machame Route:

DAY 1: MACHAME GATE – MACHAME CAMP: 10.75K /7MI | 5-6 HRS | RAINFOREST
Elevation: 1811m/5942ft to 3021m/9911ft
Altitude gained: 1210m

Embark on your Kilimanjaro adventure with a 45-minute drive from Moshi to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate, passing through the Village of Machame. Permits are acquired as we observe the organized chaos of crews gearing up for the journey. Immerse yourself in the stunning rainforest scenery and navigate the winding trails, guided by your knowledgeable leader sharing insights into local flora, fauna, and wildlife. At lower elevations, expect muddy and slippery trails, making gaiters and trekking poles highly recommended.

DAY 2: MACHAME CAMP – SHIRA CAMP: 5.3KM/3MI | 4-5HRS | MOORLAND
Elevation: 3021m/9911ft to 3839m/12,595ft
Altitude gained: 818m

After a restful night and a hearty breakfast, leave the rainforest behind as you ascend along a steep rocky ridge, crossing the valley. The path turns west, leading to a river gorge before reaching the Shira campsite. Temperatures begin to drop as you continue the journey.

DAY 3: SHIRA CAMP – LAVA TOWER – BARRANCO CAMP: 10.75KM/6MI | 5-6HRS | SEMI-DESERT
Elevation: 3839m/12,595ft to 3986m/13,077ft
Altitude gained: 147m

Although ending the day at a similar elevation, Day 3 is vital for acclimatization. Continuing east from Shira Plateau, ascend a ridge, passing the junction towards Kibo peak. Head southeast to the Lava Tower, also known as the “Shark’s Tooth” (elev. 4650m/15,250ft). After the tower, a second junction leads to the Arrow Glacier, followed by a descent to overnight at Barranco Camp.

DAY 4: BARRANCO CAMP – KARANGA CAMP: 5.2KM/3MI | 3-4HRS | ALPINE DESERT
Elevation: 3986m/13,077ft to 4034m/13,235ft
Altitude gained: 48m

Post-breakfast, ascend a steep ridge to the impressive Barranco Wall, leading to the Karanga Valley and the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail. Witness the power and strength of your crew navigating the wall with apparent ease. Overnight at Karanga Camp.

Anticipation builds with an early start between midnight and 2 a.m., marking the most mentally and physically challenging segment. Continue to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers, navigating a northwesterly switchback motion toward Stella Point on the crater rim. Enjoy a magnificent sunrise during a short rest, with faster hikers potentially witnessing it from the summit. The remaining one-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak may encounter snow.

Congratulations! Step by step, you’ve reached Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the entire continent of Africa! After capturing moments, celebrating, and perhaps shedding tears of joy, begin the steep descent to Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch and a brief rest. Gaiters and trekking poles are strongly recommended for challenging loose gravel and volcano ash terrain. A well-deserved rest awaits on your final evening on the mountain. Overnight at Mweka Camp.
